Pat has been involved in winemaking in South Australia for over 25 years before his vision for Heathfield Ridge Wines - a state of the art winery to serve the Limestone Coast was developed. Pat started in the wine industry with Thomas Hardy & Sons (now BRL Hardy) at their headquarters in Adelaide, and following their advice went onto study at Roseworthy Agricultural & Horticultural College (now part of Adelaide University). Three years of study there led to a Bachelor of Agriculture and a Diploma in Oenology, and included work experience at Wynn's Coonawarra and Rothbury Estate in the Hunter Valley. Pat took up his first winemaking position for Tolley Scott Tolley in the Barossa Valley in 1975.
Pat was appointed Senior Winemaker for the re-named Tollana in 1980, and was also responsible for the production of spirits at the grain and grape distillery. Following Penfolds takeover in 1987, Pat took up the position of Senior White Winemaker. 1989 saw a move back to his native South East of South Australia as Senior Winemaker and shareholder in Hollick Wines of Coonawarra.
Pat has also found time to be a National Wine Judge, which has undertaken for over 10 years involving tastings in Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and regional wine shows in the Hunter and Barossa Valley.
In 1996 'Patrick Tocaciu Winemaking Service' was formed as a consultancy agency and the following year saw the start of Heathfield Ridge Wines. Pat also owns a 5 acre vineyard planted around his house in the Coonawarra with premium Cabernet Sauvignon vines and is a partner in a join venture currently developing two vineyards in the Limestone Coast Region.
"Recognise the vineyard flavours, nurture the grape flavour through the winemaking process using both creative flair and clinical training to achieve the best possible wine".
